The office dabba that survives until 1 pm
Four dabba builds that pack the night before, travel well, and do not put you to sleep at 3 pm.
The short answer
Read this bit if nothing else
The afternoon slump is mostly a portion and composition problem: a large rice-heavy lunch with very little protein. A dabba with a legume, a vegetable and a protein in it behaves completely differently, and takes no longer to pack.

What actually works
- Legume in every dabba.
- Rajma, chole, kala chana, soya chunks or a thick dal. It is what makes the difference between hungry at 4 pm and not.
- Curd travels.
- A small steel container of curd survives a morning in a bag in most Indian offices between October and March. In summer, chaas in a bottle does the same job.
- Pack the salad separately.
- Cucumber and onion go soft against a hot sabzi. A separate box takes ten seconds and gets eaten.
- Two rotis, not four.
- The fourth roti is the one that costs you the afternoon.
- Keep peanuts in the drawer.
- The 4 pm vending machine decision is made in about four seconds. Whatever is in the drawer wins.

What people ask about this one
The office dabba that survives until 1 pm?
The afternoon slump is mostly a portion and composition problem: a large rice-heavy lunch with very little protein. A dabba with a legume, a vegetable and a protein in it behaves completely differently, and takes no longer to pack.
How much difference does it actually make?
454 kcal against 657 kcal for the two plates on this page — a gap of 202 kcal from a single meal, with 12.7 g of protein difference on top. Repeat that four times a week and it is not a small number any more.
Are these figures exact?
They are computed from Indian food composition data at the serving sizes shown, which makes them a good estimate of home cooking and a conservative estimate of restaurant cooking. A restaurant version of any dish here can run 30 to 60% higher, almost entirely because of fat.
Calories and macros are computed from the ThaliFacts dataset, which is based on the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (ICMR–NIN), plus the regional dishes estimated for this site and marked est wherever they appear. Energy reconciles against 4P + 4C + 9F on every build. Every source, with the date it was last checked, is listed on the sources page. General information only — not medical or nutrition advice.
