Navratri and other fasting weeks
Vrat food is not automatically light — sabudana and fried potato do most of the damage.

Read this bit if nothing else
A fast that runs on sabudana khichdi, fried aloo, singhare ki poori and a great deal of ghee is not a light week. It is a week of refined starch with almost no protein. Fasting rules vary by family and region; what follows is about the nutrition, not the observance.

A common vrat day, as actually eaten
- Sabudana Khichdi ×1321 kcal
- Sabudana Vada ×2523 kcal
- Mango Lassi ×1223 kcal
The same day with protein in it
- Curd (Dahi) ×1.5135 kcal
- Peanuts ×0.8113 kcal
- ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು ×1105 kcal
- Sabudana Khichdi ×0.7225 kcal
A difference of 489 kcal ಮತ್ತು 1.8 g of protein, from the same cuisine, the same restaurant and roughly the same amount of food on the plate. Every figure is computed from the dishes named, at the serving sizes on their ThaliFacts pages.
What actually works
- Sabudana is nearly pure starch.
- It is permitted, it is traditional, and it carries about 1 g of protein per 100 g. Peanuts in it are doing more work than the sabudana.
- Curd and paneer are usually allowed.
- Where your family's rules permit them, they are the easiest way to keep a fasting day from being a pure-carbohydrate day.
- Peanuts and makhana over fried aloo.
- Both are permitted almost everywhere and both are far better food than a fried potato.
- Hydrate deliberately.
- Most of the headache and fatigue people attribute to fasting is water and salt, not food.
- If you are diabetic or pregnant, ask first.
- Fasting changes blood sugar and medication timing. That is a conversation with a doctor, not with a website.

What people ask about this one
Navratri and other fasting weeks?
A fast that runs on sabudana khichdi, fried aloo, singhare ki poori and a great deal of ghee is not a light week. It is a week of refined starch with almost no protein. Fasting rules vary by family and region; what follows is about the nutrition, not the observance.
How much difference does it actually make?
1,067 kcal against 578 kcal for the two plates on this page — a gap of 489 kcal from a single meal, with 1.8 g of protein difference on top. Repeat that four times a week and it is not a small number any more.
Are these figures exact?
They are computed from Indian food composition data at the serving sizes shown, which makes them a good estimate of home cooking and a conservative estimate of restaurant cooking. A restaurant version of any dish here can run 30 to 60% higher, almost entirely because of fat.
Calories and macros are computed from the ThaliFacts dataset, which is based on the ಭಾರತೀಯ ಆಹಾರ ಸಂಯೋಜನೆ ಕೋಷ್ಟಕಗಳು 2017 (ICMR–NIN), plus the regional dishes estimated for this site and marked ಅಂದಾಜು wherever they appear.
